Atlantic Moonfish
Selene spp

About
Selene spp., commonly known as Atlantic moonfish or moonfish, is a group of flat, silvery, and shiny fish found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters. The most common species in this genus is Selene vomer, known for its distinctive appearance and nearly transparent body, making it easily recognizable.
Atlantic moonfish has white, tender, and juicy meat with a delicate, slightly sweet flavor, similar to hake but with an even softer texture. Due to its mild taste, it is ideal for simple preparations that highlight its freshness. In Brazil, it is often consumed fried or breaded, creating a crispy crust while maintaining a succulent interior. Another popular preparation is baking it in the oven with citrus seasonings, olive oil, garlic, and fresh herbs like thyme and cilantro.
It is also an excellent choice for seafood stews and moquecas, as it absorbs seasonings well, including bell peppers, tomatoes, and coconut milk. For lighter dishes, it can be grilled and served with simple side dishes like salads and lemon or butter-based sauces.
